Pune MPCB Suspends Six Officials Over Industrial Consent Complaints

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has suspended six officials in Pune after complaints alleging financial transactions linked to industrial consent approvals were accompanied by video footage, according to office orders reported by Civic Mirror. The action includes a regional officer, two sub-regional officers and three field officers.

The complaints concern the consent approval process that industries must complete to establish and operate projects. The video footage submitted with the complaints has been cited as supplementary evidence in the action against the officials. The MPCB has also ordered an independent departmental inquiry into the matter.

The suspensions place the handling of industrial consent approvals in Pune under scrutiny. The inquiry is expected to examine the nature of the alleged financial transactions, the individual roles of the officials and whether their official positions were misused or whether other irregularities occurred during the regulatory process.

Under the suspension orders, the six officials have been assigned headquarters at the MPCB’s headquarters in Mumbai. They cannot leave the designated headquarters without prior permission from the competent controlling authority. The suspension will remain in force until further orders.

The action followed requests for written explanations from the officials after the complaints were received. The officials submitted their responses, but the competent authority found the explanations unsatisfactory and rejected them, the office orders reportedly stated. The board then ordered the suspension of all six officials, citing the seriousness of the matter.

The MPCB’s consent mechanism is a key regulatory stage for industries seeking to set up or continue operations. It requires interaction between industrial units and the pollution-control authority, making the integrity and traceability of decisions important to both environmental compliance and industrial administration. The reported allegations have therefore raised questions about how consent applications were handled in Pune and whether the process was vulnerable to improper influence.

The suspension, however, does not establish that the allegations have been proved. The departmental inquiry will have to assess the complaints, the video material and other available evidence under the prescribed procedure. It will also determine whether any misconduct or misuse of official position took place and whether the officials had a direct connection with the alleged transactions.

A final conclusion will depend on the findings of the independent departmental inquiry. Until then, the allegations remain subject to examination, while the six officials will continue under suspension and the conditions attached to their designated Mumbai headquarters.
