A proposed CJP protest in Delhi triggered heightened security measures on Saturday, with police detaining workers and supporters near Jantar Mantar while restricting access on several routes across central Delhi and the Rajokri border. The measures affected approaches to Parliament, India Gate and the protest site as authorities prepared for more arrivals.
According to a report by Jagran – New Delhi, some CJP workers attempting to demonstrate at Jantar Mantar were taken into custody shortly after reaching the area. Supporters approaching from the Connaught Place side were also detained, while people arriving at Jantar Mantar were being stopped and taken away by police.
The report said security had been increased across the capital, with barricades and police deployments placed at multiple locations. Roads connecting Humayun’s Tomb to India Gate were closed, according to the report, amid concerns that protesters arriving through Nizamuddin railway station could use the route to reach Jantar Mantar.
Access was also restricted around the Le Meridien junction, including routes leading towards Jantar Mantar and Parliament House. Hundreds of security personnel were reported to have been deployed in the area, with police maintaining a close watch on movement around the central Delhi protest zone.
The security arrangements extended beyond the immediate protest site. At the Rajokri border on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, preparations were intensified in view of the proposed demonstration. Personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police had reached the border, while Delhi Police was preparing additional barricading, the report said.
The reported restrictions form part of a wider checking operation in the capital. Jagran also reported that police had established checkpoints at several locations and that buses and trains were being checked, with passengers questioned as authorities monitored movement towards central Delhi.
The scale of the deployment included personnel equipped with body cameras and a pink force, according to related details cited in the report. These measures were intended to record activity at different locations as the city prepared for the proposed protest and possible movement of supporters.
Jantar Mantar is Delhi’s designated protest zone, but access to the area is subject to security controls and administrative restrictions. When demonstrations draw participants from outside central Delhi, police measures can extend to railway stations, arterial roads, border points and major junctions, affecting ordinary commuters as well as protesters.
The report did not provide the total number of people detained, the legal provisions applied to the detentions or the duration of the route closures. It also did not include a detailed statement from Delhi Police or the organisers on the reasons for the proposed protest. Security arrangements and detentions were continuing as authorities monitored movement towards Jantar Mantar.
