Delhi Security Surge Shuts 45 Metro Stations Ahead of CJP Protest

Delhi metro closures and police security near central Delhi during a proposed Jantar Mantar protest

Delhi Police has deployed more than 35,000 personnel, body cameras and an all-women Pink Force in central Delhi ahead of the proposed Cockroach Janata Party protest at Jantar Mantar, while the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has closed the entry and exit gates of 45 stations as a precaution.

The protest has been announced in support of a demand to remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar from office. Police have strengthened security around Jantar Mantar and adjoining areas to maintain law and order and prevent unauthorised gatherings, according to the report published by Jagran – New Delhi.

Police personnel deployed for the duty have been equipped with uniform-mounted body cameras capable of recording in low-light conditions. The cameras are intended to document activity at the protest site, including any confrontation or crowd-control operation, and to provide a record of police action.

A police officer quoted in the report said body cameras were being used because allegations are often made against the police during instances of physical handling. The recordings, the officer said, would help establish whether action taken during the deployment was transparent.

The security plan also includes the deployment of Delhi Police’s specialised Pink Force, a unit comprising women personnel. The force has been positioned in key areas after incidents of alleged misbehaviour involving women police personnel during recent protests, the report said.

The metro restrictions are expected to affect commuters travelling through central and New Delhi areas. DMRC has closed the entry and exit gates of 45 stations as a precaution and advised passengers to use alternative routes. The report did not specify how long the closures would remain in force or whether train services would continue to pass through the affected stations.

The protest-related arrangements have also affected schools and road traffic in parts of the capital. Several schools in Delhi have shifted to online classes and postponed examinations, while traffic diversions have been introduced at 30 locations in New Delhi and central Delhi, according to related information cited in the report.

The measures place public transport access, road movement and policing under coordinated restrictions around a central-city protest zone. Further updates will depend on the police security plan, DMRC advisories and the administration’s response as the proposed gathering approaches.
