Delhi Metro Closes 45 Stations Ahead of Jantar Mantar Protest

Delhi Metro station closure affecting commuters at a station entrance in New Delhi

Delhi Metro has suspended entry and exit at 45 stations from 9 pm on Friday, October 9, until 6 pm on Saturday, October 10, citing security arrangements ahead of a protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation announced the revised restriction on social media and said security agencies would review the situation after 6 pm.

The closure affects stations across several important corridors, including locations in central Delhi, south Delhi, north Delhi and northeast Delhi. DMRC said the restriction applies to station entry and exit, while interchange facilities will remain available at all the affected stations except New Delhi.

The 45 stations listed by DMRC are Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Seva Teerth, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, ITO, Delhi Gate, Khan Market, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Jhandewalan, Supreme Court, Indraprastha, Shivaji Stadium, Delhi Haat-INA, Hauz Khas, Jor Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, Jangpura, Ashram, Jamia Millia Islamia, Chawri Bazar, Jama Masjid, Karol Bagh, Rajendra Place, Vishwavidyalaya, Kashmere Gate, Inderlok, Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar, Netaji Subhash Place, Azadpur, Jahangirpuri, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Majlis Park, Seelampur, Maujpur-Babarpur, Jafrabad, Welcome, Yamuna Vihar, Khajuri Khas, Shahdara and Rithala.

The restriction represents a revision of an earlier DMRC update that had listed 57 stations for closure. The metro operator subsequently reduced the number by 12 stations in its revised communication issued on Friday night.

The affected locations include major interchange and commercial stations such as Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Kashmere Gate, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Mandi House and Azadpur. Although trains may continue to operate through the network, passengers will not be able to enter or exit at the listed stations during the specified period. Commuters using these stations will need to check route and interchange options before travelling.

DMRC said the restrictions would remain in force until 6 pm on Saturday, after which security agencies would assess the situation and provide further information. The operator did not announce a separate end time for the restrictions beyond that review.
