Noida International Airport Set for Name Change as NCR Aviation Expands

Noida International Airport project site in Jewar with airport construction and regional connectivity infrastructure

The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has approved a proposal to rename the Noida International Airport in Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport, marking a significant administrative change for the greenfield airport being developed in Gautam Buddh Nagar district.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the decision at a press conference after a cabinet meeting chaired by him on Friday. The cabinet approval is the latest step in the proposed renaming, although the airport’s wider development programme remains focused on expanding aviation capacity and multimodal connectivity across the National Capital Region.

Located in Jewar, the airport is intended to serve passengers from Noida, Greater Noida, western Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the NCR. Its first phase has been designed to handle around 12 million passengers annually. The project is spread across more than 1,300 hectares and is expected to support passenger and cargo operations as its capacity expands.

The airport is being planned as a complement to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, with the two facilities expected to distribute the region’s growing passenger demand. The effectiveness of that arrangement will depend on how easily travellers can reach Jewar from Delhi, neighbouring districts and other parts of western Uttar Pradesh.

A ground transportation centre is being developed as part of the airport’s access infrastructure. The proposed transport links include metro services, high-speed rail, buses, taxis and parking for private vehicles. Plans also envisage a connection with the proposed Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail corridor, although that link will depend on further development and implementation of the rail project.

Road and rail connectivity will therefore be central to the airport’s functioning beyond the terminal itself. Without reliable regional access, the airport’s passenger catchment could remain more limited than the overall aviation demand in the NCR would suggest. The supplied project details identify multimodal integration as a major component of the development plan.

The airport’s plans also include cargo operations, commercial activity and employment generation as capacity increases. Its development has been presented as a potential economic hub for Uttar Pradesh, with investment and supporting businesses expected to grow around the aviation facility.

Environmental measures form another stated part of the project. The development plan includes steps aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency, with an ambition of achieving net-zero emissions. The airport’s long-term performance on that objective will depend on implementation as construction, operations and supporting infrastructure advance.

The cabinet’s approval establishes the proposed new name, while the airport’s broader regional role will depend on the completion of passenger facilities, transport connections and supporting commercial infrastructure. Further milestones will be tied to the airport’s phased development and the implementation of the proposed road, metro and rail links.
