Mumbai Heatwave Warning Issued as Temperatures Rise Across MMR

Mumbai heatwave warning as residents walk through a hot, humid city street

The India Meteorological Department has issued a Mumbai heatwave warning for isolated pockets of Mumbai and Raigad, with heatwave conditions also expected in parts of South Konkan until October 12. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai said hot and humid weather was likely at isolated locations in North Konkan as temperatures rise across parts of Maharashtra.

According to the weather bulletin issued by the RMC on October 8, isolated pockets of Mumbai and Raigad were likely to experience heatwave conditions on Friday, October 9. The warning follows the recent withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Maharashtra and is the first heatwave warning issued for Mumbai and some other parts of the state, Mid-Day reported, citing PTI inputs.

The IMD has forecast a gradual increase of 2-3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures in some parts of Maharashtra over the next 48 hours. Temperatures could rise by another 1-3 degrees Celsius thereafter, according to the report.

Maximum temperatures in parts of interior Maharashtra are expected to remain between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius on October 9 and 10. While the heatwave warning is limited to isolated locations, the combination of higher temperatures and humidity could increase discomfort across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the wider Konkan belt.

The MMR includes Mumbai and adjoining areas in Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts. The urban region is spread across nine municipal corporations, meaning that heat conditions can affect a large and varied population across dense urban neighbourhoods, suburban corridors and peripheral areas. The IMD’s warning covers the coastal belt, although the expected conditions differ between South and North Konkan.

The weather department has advised residents to follow official updates, drink sufficient water and limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. These precautions are particularly relevant for people working outdoors, commuters, older residents and those whose daily activities require extended exposure to heat and humidity.

The warning comes as southern Maharashtra is expected to receive light rain and thundershowers during the afternoon or evening over the weekend. The forecast indicates that weather conditions will remain uneven across the state, with some areas facing rising heat while others may see limited rainfall.

The IMD’s alert remains in force until October 12. Residents and civic authorities will need to track subsequent weather bulletins for updates on the location and intensity of heatwave conditions across Mumbai, Raigad and the Konkan region.
