Ahmedabad Encroachment Drive Opens Roads, Reclaims Reserved Plots

Ahmedabad encroachment drive clearing structures from a town-planning road

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has removed shops, homes and other structures from reserved plots and town-planning roads across Naranpura, Ranip, Paldi and New Vadaj, while a separate enforcement action in the eastern zone involved the removal of six sheds, seizure of goods and charges against vehicles.

In Naranpura’s Rannapark area, the civic body cleared six permanent commercial shops occupying about 350 square metres of reserved Final Plot No. 592 under the second variation of Town Planning Scheme No. 29. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation subsequently took possession of the reserved plot, according to a report by Gujarat Samachar – Ahmedabad.

The action in Ranip involved 19 temporary and permanent homes from Final Plot No. 295/1 under Preliminary Town Planning Scheme No. 66, covering Ranip, Chenpur and Chandlodia. The plot measures 2,804 square metres. The municipal corporation took possession of the reserved land after removing the structures.

In Paldi, civic teams cleared an estimated 60 to 65 temporary and permanent homes and huts along a 12-metre town-planning road near the Ganesh Awas Yojana area in Bhudarpura, extending towards Shreyas Metro Station. The operation opened approximately 60 metres of the road, the report said.

A permanent ramp-like structure measuring about 15 square metres was also removed from an 18-metre town-planning road running from Shantaram Hall towards Nirnaynagar in New Vadaj. The action opened around 10 metres of the road for use.

The locations identified in the drive reflect two municipal functions that often overlap on the ground: protecting land reserved through town-planning schemes and keeping planned road alignments available for public access. Reserved plots can be designated for civic or public purposes, while town-planning roads are intended to create connections within developed neighbourhoods. Encroachments on either can delay planned access or prevent the civic body from using land for its stated purpose.

The eastern zone action focused on roadside and commercial obstructions. Municipal teams removed six sheds and seized 31 handcarts, one vehicle, one cart, 15 weighing scales, 30 crates, 10 cots, 45 boards or banners and 125 other items, according to the report.

The corporation also locked 41 vehicles. It collected Rs 7,000 in encroachment-related charges, Rs 2,500 for unauthorised advertisements and Rs 17,400 in administrative charges linked to the locked vehicles, taking the total reported recovery to Rs 26,900.

The report did not provide details on rehabilitation, notice periods, ownership claims or the future use and implementation schedule for the cleared plots and road sections. The municipal corporation’s next steps will determine how the reclaimed land and opened road portions are secured and brought into their planned public use.
