Ahmedabad BJP Corporator Dispute Escalates Over Delayed Civic Works

Ahmedabad BJP corporator dispute outside an AMC ward office in Shahpur

Ahmedabad BJP corporator dispute intensified on October 9 after Shahpur ward corporator Jitendra Chauhan locked the office of an assistant city engineer near the Dudheshwar water tank, alleging that civic works in his ward had not been carried out despite repeated representations. The protest prompted Ahmedabad BJP city president Prerak Shah to call all four Shahpur ward corporators for a discussion on party discipline and pending development works.

The meeting was held at the party office in the presence of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s ruling party leader Jashubhai Thakor and general secretary Umang Nayak. According to the report, the party heard Chauhan’s representation and sought details from municipal officials about the status of the works linked to his ward.

Chauhan alleged that drainage, water supply and works proposed from the corporator’s budget had not progressed. He warned that other municipal offices could also be locked if the works were not taken up and demanded the resignation of the municipal commissioner.

Thakor said Chauhan had proposed 32 works and claimed that 28 had been completed, with four remaining. He said the matter would be discussed further at an internal party coordination meeting. Thakor also noted that Chauhan had earlier been in the Congress before joining the BJP and being elected as a corporator, but said he understood the BJP’s disciplinary framework.

A separate account from AMC central zone deputy commissioner Ramya Bhatt placed the completion figure differently. Bhatt said two of the four works allocated under Chauhan’s budget had been completed. She added that meetings were regularly held with corporators and the local legislator, and rejected the suggestion that officials were not hearing corporators’ representations or carrying out works.

The differing figures indicate that the party and municipal administration were referring to different sets of works or different stages of completion. The supplied report does not establish whether the 32 works cited by Thakor included projects beyond the four works mentioned by Bhatt, nor does it provide a project-wise status list.

The dispute has brought ward-level coordination between elected representatives, the municipal administration and the ruling party into focus. In an AMC governed by the BJP, a corporator’s decision to lock a civic office has also revived questions within the party about how local complaints are escalated and how development commitments are tracked.

The incident is not the first reported instance of a BJP corporator or a family member locking a municipal office. The report refers to an earlier episode involving the husband of a woman corporator from Paldi and another involving a corporator from Asarwa. The Shahpur case will now be taken up at a further internal party coordination meeting, where the status of the disputed works is expected to be discussed.
