Rejinagar Development Projects Promised as BJP Takes By-Election Lead

Rejinagar development projects including a proposed bridge and rural road in West Bengal

Suvendu Adhikari has promised a bridge, a college, an industrial complex and several milk collection centres in Rejinagar, as BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar maintained a substantial lead in the Assembly by-election count on Friday. The proposed projects would address transport connectivity, higher education, industrial investment and local livelihood support, but no detailed costs or project-wise implementation schedules were announced.

According to Election Commission of India figures cited in the report, Sarkar had received 1,00,198 votes against 34,987 polled by Aam Janata Unnayan Party candidate Golam Nabi Azad after the 11th round of counting as of 3 pm. The figures represented the position during counting and did not by themselves constitute a final result.

Addressing development requirements in the constituency at the state secretariat Nabanna, Adhikari said the Ramkhel Bari bridge, a college in Rejinagar and an industrial complex would be developed. He said the projects would be implemented in phases and that an industry would be established in the area within two to three years.

The bridge proposal is the most direct infrastructure commitment among the announcements. A project at Ramkhel Bari could affect movement and access for residents, although the available details do not specify the bridge’s proposed alignment, length, estimated cost, land requirements or the authority responsible for construction.

The proposed college would add a higher-education facility to the constituency, while the industrial complex and planned industry are intended to support investment and employment. The announcement did not identify the industrial sector, the proposed site, the land-acquisition process, the investment model or the number of jobs expected to be created.

Adhikari also promised several Amul milk collection centres, linking the announcement to local livelihoods and agricultural or dairy-related income. The report does not provide the number of centres, their locations, the operating agency, procurement arrangements or the timeline for their establishment.

The commitments place implementation details at the centre of the next phase. For the bridge, college and industrial complex to move beyond election promises, the state would need to specify project authorities, funding provisions, approvals and tender or construction milestones. None of those details were provided in the announcement covered by The Statesman.

Adhikari also attributed the BJP’s electoral performance to support from welfare-scheme beneficiaries, including minority women, and claimed that around 35,000 Muslim women and other minority beneficiaries had contributed to the party’s showing. Those political claims were part of his remarks and were not accompanied in the report by independently detailed beneficiary data.

The immediate measurable development commitments are therefore the proposed projects themselves, while their practical impact will depend on whether the government publishes costs, locations, administrative responsibility and implementation schedules. The next milestone is the completion of counting and any subsequent formal action on the promised works.
