Kolkata has begun adding 28 portable bio-toilets to its civic facilities while launching the restoration of a 2.2-kilometre brick sewer on B.B. Ganguly Street, according to a report by Sanmarg – Kolkata. The initiatives were inaugurated at a ceremony attended by minister Agnimitra Paul, minister Tapas Roy and Kolkata Municipal Corporation administrator Smita Pandey.
The portable bio-toilets are being introduced through an initiative of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s Uttaran Services department. The facilities will be installed in Ward 12 under Borough II and comprise 20 Indian-style units and eight Western-style units.
The civic project is intended to improve access to public sanitation facilities and provide cleaner and more hygienic services for residents. The supplied report does not specify the exact installation locations within the ward or the operational arrangements for cleaning and maintenance.
Separately, the KMC has started work to restore an approximately 2.2-kilometre brick-built sewer along B.B. Ganguly Street, from B.B.D. Bagh East to the A.P.C. Road junction. The work will involve desilting and lining the sewer rather than constructing a new drainage route.
The sewer restoration falls within Borough V and covers Wards 45, 46, 47, 48 and 49. The municipal initiative is expected to improve drainage in the area and support the delivery of daily civic services, according to the report.
The two projects address different parts of Kolkata’s basic urban-services network: public sanitation access in Ward 12 and the functioning of an existing drainage asset across five wards. The source report does not provide the project costs, completion schedule, contractor details or any information about planned traffic or pedestrian arrangements during the sewer work. The next stated step is the implementation of the portable toilet and sewer restoration projects by the relevant KMC departments.
