Delhi Metro Faces 57-Station Shutdown Ahead of October 10 Protest

Delhi Metro station closures being considered ahead of a protest in central Delhi

Delhi Metro commuters could face closures at 57 stations and reduced train frequencies from Friday night into Saturday as Delhi Police seeks security measures ahead of the Cockroach Janata Party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10. The police request also includes the possible cancellation of trains to New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations between 4am and 2pm, according to the Times of India.

The proposed restrictions would affect major interchange points and stations across the national capital, including Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Mandi House, Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, INA, Hauz Khas, Azadpur, Jamia Millia Islamia, Shaheen Bagh, Welcome and Rohini West. The measures have been proposed in response to concerns over possible crowd movement towards sensitive locations during the demonstration.

In a letter dated Thursday, Joint Commissioner of Police (Transport Range) Rajneesh Gupta asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to close the identified stations from 9pm on Friday until Saturday. The letter also said that the frequency of trains passing through the listed stations could be reduced on October 10 depending on the security situation.

The police request does not, by itself, confirm that the DMRC has accepted or implemented all the proposed measures. The final operational status of individual stations and train services would determine the effect on commuters travelling through central Delhi and other connected parts of the network.

The CJP has announced a youth-led protest at Jantar Mantar over alleged vote theft, the exclusion of young voters from electoral rolls and other concerns involving the Election Commission. The demonstration is directed in part against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. CJP leaders have said they intend to proceed despite police restrictions.

Delhi Police has warned against the proposed gathering and said prohibitory restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita are in force in the national capital. Police have stated that unauthorised gatherings could invite legal action. The proposed metro measures are therefore linked to crowd-control planning, rather than a scheduled change to the network’s regular operations.

The CJP has also alleged that its national organisation co-in-charge, Deepak Baliyan, was placed under house arrest in Alwar. In a post on X, the party claimed that around 40 police personnel in plain clothes were present at his residence and alleged that Alwar Police had returned after detaining him from his home at night. Baliyan was quoted as expressing concern for his family’s safety. These allegations were made by the party and were not independently established in the supplied report.

The party further alleged that more than 30,000 police personnel could be deployed across Delhi and questioned whether the restrictions represented the making of an Emergency. The transport-related figures and station closures remain subject to implementation by the relevant authorities. Commuters using the Delhi Metro and long-distance rail services on Friday night and Saturday should rely on official DMRC and railway updates for confirmed service information.
