Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has urged citizens to stop holding midnight birthday celebrations and cake-cutting events on Tank Bund, major roads, lakefronts and public parks after a fatal accident involving a family celebrating a child’s birthday.
Sajjanar said the recent accident took place on Tank Bund at around 2 am. A family had reached the location to celebrate the birthday of a six-year-old girl when the incident claimed the lives of the child and one family member. Police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to hospital, but efforts to save them were unsuccessful, according to the commissioner’s warning reported by Telangana Today.
The commissioner said he inspected the accident site with senior police officials and held a comprehensive review with various government departments to identify measures that could prevent similar incidents. He urged parents and young people to celebrate birthdays at home or at other safe venues instead of using public roads and lakefront locations during late-night hours.
“With traffic often moving at high speeds during the early hours, taking children onto roads for celebrations poses serious risks,” Sajjanar said, according to the report. His warning places the focus on the danger created when pedestrians and groups gather on roads or roadside public spaces while traffic continues to move through the area.
Sajjanar also said that birthday celebrations on Tank Bund are prohibited under existing rules, referring to earlier directions issued by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Despite regular police efforts to disperse groups gathering at the location, some people continue to return during midnight hours, the report said.
The issue highlights the difficulty of enforcing restrictions in popular public spaces that attract residents late at night. Tank Bund, roads near lakes and public parks can become informal gathering points, but the police have warned that celebrations involving children and families in traffic-exposed areas can create severe safety risks.
The commissioner appealed to citizens not to risk lives for short celebrations and asked them to avoid late-night gatherings at Tank Bund, lakes and other public places. The police and government departments are expected to continue reviewing measures to prevent similar accidents.
