Police have arrested a man accused of harassing a woman inside a lift at Kolkata’s Dharmatala Metro station, with a Bankshall court ordering his custody in jail until October 15. The case concerns an alleged incident in the New Market area and has raised an immediate public-safety concern within a busy urban transit facility.
The accused has been identified as Shamim Alam Beg. According to the report by Sanmarg – Kolkata, Hare Street police arrested him in connection with the alleged incident at the Metro station. The report said the woman was allegedly subjected to obscene behaviour and harassment inside the lift.
Police produced the accused before Bankshall court on Thursday. During the hearing, government lawyer Arup Chakraborty told the court that the accused had engaged in obscene acts and harassed the woman inside the lift at Dharmatala Metro station.
The court considered the seriousness of the allegations and directed that Shamim Alam Beg be sent to jail custody until October 15. The custody order means the accused will remain in judicial custody while the case proceeds through the legal process. The allegations have not been tested in a trial.
Dharmatala is a major commercial and transport zone in central Kolkata, with Metro facilities serving commuters travelling through the New Market area. A lift in a station is an enclosed, high-use public space, making the reported incident relevant to questions about passenger safety and the ability of transit authorities and police to respond to misconduct within station premises.
The report does not provide details about the alleged incident’s exact date, the sections of law invoked, the woman’s statement, or any response from Kolkata Metro authorities. It also does not indicate whether additional arrests or security measures have been announced. The next stated legal milestone is the accused’s custody period, which runs until October 15.
