Kolkata Attack on Former Mayor Triggers Police Hunt After Bottle Assault

Kolkata attack investigation outside a residence in Purbalok after beer bottles were allegedly thrown

Police have registered an FIR after unidentified men allegedly attacked the residence of former Kolkata mayor and senior Calcutta High Court advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya in Purba Jadavpur early Thursday morning, prompting a security deployment outside the house and an investigation based on CCTV footage.

According to a report by Sanmarg, the incident took place at around 5am at Bhattacharya’s residence at 35 Purbalok, Second Lane. The attackers, who reportedly arrived on a motorcycle, allegedly threw beer bottles at the house. The complaint also states that they used abusive language against the women in the household and threatened the senior advocate with serious consequences.

The Purba Jadavpur police station has registered a case and begun an investigation. A police team led by Sub-Inspector Hemant Mukherjee inspected the site after receiving information about the incident, according to the report.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area. The footage reportedly shows a motorcycle-borne suspect whose face was covered. Police believe the person left the area after the incident and travelled towards Daspara Bridge at around 5.35am.

The report said police are also examining the suspect’s possible connection with the Panchasayar police station area, including Bikash Guha Colony and nearby locations. Officers in plain clothes have been deployed to monitor areas where the suspect may be identified. The report did not disclose whether any arrest had been made at the time of publication.

Following the incident, a police picket was placed outside Bhattacharya’s Purbalok residence. Police have also increased patrolling in the surrounding area and said they were maintaining heightened surveillance while efforts continued to identify the alleged attacker.

The case places a senior lawyer and former civic office-holder at the centre of a residential security investigation in south-east Kolkata. The immediate police response involves securing the residence, reviewing camera footage and tracing the route reportedly taken by the motorcycle-borne suspect. Further action will depend on the investigation and identification of the person seen in the footage.

Police said they expected to identify and arrest the accused soon. No independent confirmation of the suspect’s identity or the motive behind the alleged attack was included in the supplied report.
