New Town Apartment Death Raises Questions After Body Found Days Later

New Town apartment building linked to the reported death of an IT professional

Police recovered the decomposed body of a 30-year-old IT professional from her rented apartment in New Town’s Sukhobrishti housing complex early on Thursday, after neighbours reported an unbearable smell from the flat. The woman, identified as Apla Pradhan, appeared to have died two to three days earlier, according to the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.

Pradhan, who was from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, worked for a software company and lived alone in the apartment, police said. Neighbours told investigators that they had not seen her for several days before informing the police on Wednesday.

A police team arrived at the housing complex early on Thursday and shifted the body. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a case of unnatural death has been initiated, a senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said.

“We are not sure about the medical condition of the deceased, including whether she was suffering from a particular ailment. Her call details are being examined, and we will wait for the post-mortem report to reach us,” the officer said.

Police have not established the cause of death. Investigators are examining Pradhan’s call details, while her family in Jamshedpur has been informed about the death, according to sources cited in the report.

The recovery has drawn attention to the circumstances of people living alone in large housing complexes, where neighbours may not immediately notice an absence. In this case, the smell from the apartment led residents to contact the police after several days without seeing Pradhan.

The post-mortem report is expected to help establish when and how Pradhan died. The police investigation, including examination of her call records, is continuing.
