Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed civic and transport agencies to intensify the illegal parking crackdown, improve use of existing parking facilities and coordinate enforcement across the Capital, according to a report by Millennium Post – Delhi.
At a high-level meeting on Thursday, Sandhu asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Delhi Traffic Police to conduct joint enforcement drives at parking sites and prevent unauthorised parking. Resident welfare associations and market associations will also be involved in enforcement around multi-level parking facilities.
The Traffic Police told the meeting that 13,34,700 challans and 5,54,073 notices had been issued for unauthorised parking until October 5 this year. During the same period, 1,24,906 vehicles were towed using 76 cranes, the report said.
The MCD has planned a dedicated enforcement drive from October 15 to December 15. The drive will cover identified parking hotspots and market corridors, where unauthorised parking can restrict road space and create conflicts between moving and parked vehicles.
Delhi currently has 463 parking sites, including 433 surface parking facilities and 30 multi-level or stack parking facilities. Together, these sites provide capacity equivalent to 94,831 car spaces, according to the details presented at the meeting.
The Lieutenant Governor also sought uniform parking charges across facilities and called for wider use of Park and Ride arrangements. Other measures discussed included slot tracking and the creation of a unified parking authority, indicating a push towards coordinating parking operations rather than relying only on enforcement against vehicles parked in unauthorised locations.
The planned action will require coordination among municipal agencies, the Traffic Police, parking operators, RWAs and market associations. The report did not specify the locations of all identified hotspots, the proposed uniform fee structure or a timeline for establishing the unified parking authority.
The MCD enforcement drive is scheduled to run from October 15 to December 15, while agencies are expected to continue joint action and improve utilisation of existing parking facilities.
