IIT Bombay Gas Leak Fire Injures Five, Including Two Children

IIT Bombay gas leak fire response near a hostel building in Powai, Mumbai

A gas leak-triggered fire at Hostel No. 6 on the IIT Bombay campus in Powai injured five people, including two children, on Thursday night, with all those hurt reported to be in stable condition.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s disaster management cell said it received information about the incident at around 10.24 pm. The fire was reported inside the hostel premises after a leak from a cylinder pipe, according to civic officials.

The injured were initially taken to Rajawadi Hospital for treatment. Four were later shifted to Kasturba Hospital, while one remained admitted at Rajawadi Hospital, the Indian Express reported.

Those injured have been identified as Ansh Ahirwar, 12, Tahjib Aalam, 9, Ishwar Singh, 37, Shivkumar Singh, 34, and Anilkumar Yadav, 23. Ahirwar, Aalam, Shivkumar Singh and Yadav were transferred to Kasturba Hospital for further treatment. Ishwar Singh continued to receive treatment at Rajawadi Hospital.

A civic official said it was possible that leakage from the cylinder had triggered the fire. The statement indicates the suspected sequence of events, but the supplied report does not establish whether a formal investigation has determined the exact cause of the leak or the fire.

The incident was the second reported gas leak-related fire in Mumbai on Thursday. Earlier in the day, a major fire broke out at a labour camp in Mulund following a reported gas leak. The two incidents place attention on the risks associated with cooking-gas systems in high-occupancy or temporary residential settings, although the supplied report does not link the incidents beyond their reported timing and suspected gas-leak triggers.

At IIT Bombay, the immediate response involved civic disaster-management officials and hospital transfers for the injured. The report does not provide details about the extent of damage to Hostel No. 6, whether other residents were evacuated, or whether the hostel resumed normal operations after the incident.

The condition of all five injured people was reported as stable. Four remained under treatment at Kasturba Hospital and one at Rajawadi Hospital, according to the details available in the report.
