Yadadri Power Plant Gets Fresh Coal Push as Telangana Seeks Centre’s Nod

Yadadri thermal power plant and Telangana coal infrastructure in an industrial landscape

Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has urged Union Minister G Kishan Reddy to allocate Mahanadi coal to the Yadadri thermal power plant, while seeking central intervention on fertiliser supplies, coal mining, airport development and railway projects across the state.

Tummala made the requests during a meeting with Kishan Reddy on Friday and submitted representations covering several development projects. The coal allocation for Yadadri was sought in line with a request previously made by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, according to the report.

The minister also asked the Centre to find a permanent solution to operational problems faced by Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd (RFCL). The stated objective is to ensure uninterrupted urea supplies to farmers in Telangana. The representation did not specify the nature of the problems at RFCL or set out a timeline for resolving them.

Among the other requests was an allocation of ₹100 crore from Coal India’s corporate social responsibility funds for the proposed University of Earth Sciences at Kothagudem. Tummala also urged the Centre to allocate the Sattupalli Block-III coal block to Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL), Telangana’s state-owned coal mining company.

The representations extended to regional connectivity. Tummala requested that the Centre expedite plans for a greenfield airport in Bhadradri Kothagudem district. The report did not provide a proposed location, project cost, construction schedule or approval status for the airport.

On rail infrastructure, the minister sought faster clearances for projects in Telangana and urged the Centre to prioritise the Sattupalli-Kovvuru and Penuballi-Kondapalli railway lines. He also called for the early completion of the Pandurangapuram-Malkangiri railway line up to Sarapaka. No revised completion dates or fresh funding commitments for the railway projects were announced in the report.

The requests bring together infrastructure systems that affect Telangana’s power generation, farm input supply, mineral economy and regional connectivity. Coal allocation for the Yadadri plant and the proposed transfer of the Sattupalli block relate to fuel security and mining administration, while the railway and airport proposals concern the movement of people and goods from districts with significant industrial and agricultural activity.

Tummala asked Kishan Reddy to extend the Centre’s support and expedite the projects, describing them as crucial to Telangana’s development. The report did not indicate whether the Union minister accepted the requests or whether any of the projects received formal approval following the meeting.
