Western Railway Rolls Out AI Cameras on 978 Engines

Western Railway is set to install nearly 6,000 AI based CCTV cameras across 978 electric and diesel locomotives, with full deployment expected by March 2026. This ₹100 crore initiative aims to enhance operational safety through comprehensive peripheral and driver cab monitoring. Through 360 degree footage, the system will improve incident analysis, track oversight, and accountability in emergency situations across the region.

Each locomotive will receive six high-resolution cameras: two inside the driver cabs and four mounted externally to monitor all sides. These units will capture real-time visuals of track conditions, nearby crossings, personnel movement, and any irregularities. By combining AI analytics with offline storage, Western Railway aims to bolster accident investigation, operational transparency, and commuter safety across its fleet.

The AI enabled cameras are expected to provide critical data during emergencies and support detailed investigations. Oversight will extend to internal cab activity and external hazards. With train engines operating across Mumbai and other regional hubs, this upgrade addresses long-standing concerns over unmonitored zones and delayed incident response. Agencies emphasise that the encrypted offline storage protects data integrity and prevents security breaches.

A formal tender process has begun, seeking vendors capable of delivering cameras, software, and access to source code. Installation is slated for completion by March 2026. With six units per engine—including a peripheral scanner—the rollout will cover 810 electric and 168 diesel locomotives. Engineers note that this approach aligns with international “black box” standards, promising robust safety and monitoring capabilities.

Observers say this initiative could mark a turning point in railway infrastructure oversight. By combining real-time surveillance with AI analytics, Western Railway establishes a precedent for systemic safety reform. The initiative can be seen as a model for broader AI integration across Indian Railways. Experts highlight its potential to reduce human error, manage track anomalies, and elevate national rail safety standards over the coming years.

Western Railway’s plan to equip nearly 1,000 locomotives with AI-powered cameras reflects a strategic leap toward data-driven rail safety. With full deployment planned by early 2026, the system is likely to improve incident response, infrastructure monitoring, and accountability.
