Visakhapatnam Railway Station Enhances Capacity with Platform Extensions

The South End Foot Over Bridge (FOB) near Gate No. 3 has been temporarily closed. This closure, effective from today, is part of ongoing efforts to extend Platforms 6, 7, and 8, aiming to accommodate the increasing passenger traffic and enhance operational efficiency. The decision to close the South End FOB is a calculated step in the broader redevelopment plan for Visakhapatnam Railway Station.

The station, currently handling approximately 45,000 passengers daily, is undergoing a significant transformation to meet the demands of modern rail travel. The extension of Platforms 6, 7, and 8 is expected to alleviate congestion and improve the overall passenger experience. The redevelopment project, estimated at ₹456 crore, includes the construction of two new platforms, the demolition of the existing station building adjacent to Platform No. 8, and the development of a multi-level parking facility. Additionally, the station will feature 36 lifts, 24 escalators, ramps for the physically disabled, and a 108-meter-long air concourse connecting the main station building with all platforms. These enhancements aim to streamline passenger movement and provide world-class facilities.

With the South End FOB temporarily closed, passengers are advised to utilize the remaining two Foot Over Bridges and the available lifts for accessing the platforms. The station authorities have implemented measures to manage the increased footfall and ensure smooth movement within the station premises. Signage has been updated, and announcements are being made to guide passengers effectively. Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra, along with senior officials, is closely monitoring the construction works. He has directed station staff to manage crowd control and assist passengers to minimize any inconvenience during this transitional phase.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager K. Saandeep expressed regret over the temporary inconvenience caused to passengers and appealed for their cooperation during this essential phase of infrastructure enhancement. He emphasized that these developments are crucial for improving connectivity, safety, and the overall passenger experience at Visakhapatnam Railway Station. The redevelopment efforts align with the broader vision of transforming Visakhapatnam into a modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly railway hub. By expanding capacity and upgrading facilities, the station aims to meet the growing demands of rail travel and contribute to the region’s economic development. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed about the ongoing developments and cooperate with the station authorities to ensure a smooth and safe travel experience.
