An eight-foot compound wall belonging to the BSNL office in Uppinangady, Dakshina Kannada, collapsed onto a passenger shelter near the bus stand on Saturday night after two days of rain, while local residents warned that the remaining structure could still damage the shelter.
The collapse occurred in the area housing the BSNL office and tower. The wall had been built to secure the premises, but its base reportedly weakened after continuous rainfall. The noise from the collapse startled passengers at the shelter, who ran away and escaped injury.
One section of the compound wall has fallen completely. A large part of the wall is now leaning against the iron supports of a substantial advertising board, creating a risk that it could fall further and damage the passenger shelter, according to concerns raised by local residents.
The reported danger extends beyond the collapsed section. The bases of all the pillars in front of the shelter, where passengers rest while waiting, were found to be hollow and in a hazardous condition, a local businessman reportedly brought to the attention of the media.
The incident has therefore left a public waiting facility exposed beside a busy bus-stand area. Although no injuries were reported, the collapse occurred directly over the shelter and highlighted the risk posed by weakened boundary structures in places used by passengers.
The report did not specify whether the remaining wall, the advertising-board supports or the shelter pillars had been cordoned off or inspected by the responsible authorities. Immediate action on the unstable structures and an assessment of the shelter are the next necessary steps identified by the reported safety concerns.
