The Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation has moved to widen Hyderabad’s congested Uppal Stadium Road to 120 feet after a joint inspection identified about 0.78 acres of Survey of India land that may be required for the project.
The inspection was conducted on Monday by the MMC Commissioner, officials from the Survey of India and officers from the corporation’s engineering and town planning departments. The proposed widening is intended to improve traffic flow and reduce delays on the road leading to Uppal Stadium.
Officials identified portions of Survey of India land occupied by existing compound walls and sheds belonging to Kendriya Vidyalaya. The identification of the land is a preliminary step towards taking the road-widening work forward, with the corporation now required to examine the acquisition and compensation process under applicable regulations.
The MMC Commissioner directed the officials concerned to assess compensation for the land and initiate further action. The directions bring land acquisition and compensation into the implementation process, indicating that the physical expansion of the road will depend on coordination between the municipal corporation, Survey of India and the affected institutions.
The Commissioner also asked the Chief City Planner to remove temporary barricading sheets at the NSL buildings, which officials said were obstructing the widening work. The instruction is aimed at clearing identified impediments along the road alignment while the departments proceed with the other formalities.
Uppal Stadium Road is a key approach to the stadium and has been identified by the corporation as a congested stretch where traffic movement is affected. The proposed 120-foot width is expected by the corporation to create additional road space and facilitate smoother vehicular movement in the area.
The project also highlights the administrative complexity involved in widening an existing urban road. The work requires the municipal engineering and town planning departments to coordinate with the Survey of India, address structures and land under institutional use, and complete compensation-related procedures before construction can advance.
The departments concerned have been directed to coordinate and expedite land acquisition, compensation and the road-widening work. The next steps are the examination of compensation under the applicable regulations, removal of the identified temporary obstruction and further action on the land required for the proposed widening.
