UP ATS Gets ₹5 Crore Boost for Bomb-Disposal Equipment

UP ATS bomb-disposal equipment planned for specialised security operations in Uttar Pradesh

The Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned ₹5 crore for 2026-27 to strengthen the state Anti-Terrorist Squad’s counter-terror and bomb-disposal capabilities, with specialised equipment planned for operations in urban and other high-risk environments.

The allocation, approved with the Governor’s sanction, will fund equipment including explosive ordnance disposal bomb suits, explosive-vapour detectors, night-vision devices, non-linear junction detectors and bomb blankets. Procurement will be carried out by the Uttar Pradesh Police Headquarters and the ATS headquarters in Lucknow.

The largest portion of the sanction, ₹2.51 crore, has been earmarked for four explosive ordnance disposal, or EOD, bomb suits. These suits are designed to provide protection to personnel handling suspected explosives and carrying out bomb-disposal operations.

The government has also approved ₹1.25 crore for four handheld explosive-vapour detectors. The devices are intended to help specialised teams identify traces associated with explosives during security checks and response operations.

For night operations, the ATS will purchase 18 night-vision monoculars at a cost of ₹81 lakh. The equipment is expected to improve visibility during surveillance and special operations conducted in low-light conditions, according to the report.

The procurement package also includes two non-linear junction detectors valued at ₹32.8 lakh and two bomb blankets costing ₹9.22 lakh. Non-linear junction detectors are used by bomb-disposal and security teams to locate electronic components that may be associated with explosive devices or concealed equipment.

The sanction comes as state authorities focus on strengthening specialised police units and their ability to respond to terrorism-related threats, explosives and covert surveillance requirements. The allocation covers the 2026-27 financial year and is specifically directed towards upgrading operational equipment rather than creating a new unit or announcing additional personnel.

The decision places Lucknow at the centre of the procurement process because both the Uttar Pradesh Police Headquarters and ATS headquarters involved in the purchase are located in the city. The equipment will be acquired for the ATS and special operations units, although the report does not specify how it will be distributed among districts or operational teams.

The approved list indicates a focus on several stages of emergency response: protective equipment for personnel, detection of explosive material, identification of concealed electronic components, visibility during night operations and protection against blast effects. The government report did not provide a delivery schedule, deployment plan or details of the procurement tender.

The sanction also does not state whether the equipment will supplement existing inventories or replace older devices. The next operational milestone will be the procurement process by the police and ATS headquarters during the 2026-27 financial year.
