The Thrikkakara breakfast scheme, a CSR-funded initiative for schoolchildren, has been launched to provide morning meals to 5,071 students across 28 schools in the constituency. The programme covers students from LKG, UKG, lower primary and upper primary classes.
Named Subhiksham Thrikkakara, the initiative is being implemented under the leadership of Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas and the PT Thomas Foundation. The project has been backed by corporate social responsibility funding of Rs 1 crore.
Actor Jayasurya inaugurated the programme at St Augustine’s LP School in Thykoodam on Thursday. The launch was attended by Ernakulam district collector G Priyanka, Indian volleyball player Tom Joseph, Thrikkakara municipal chairperson Rashid Ullampilly, school representatives and members of the foundation.
According to the organisers, the scheme is intended to ensure that participating students receive breakfast before attending classes. Thomas said the initiative was launched with the objective of ensuring that “no child had to attend classes hungry”.
The programme places a privately funded school meal intervention within the local education and municipal ecosystem. Its immediate operational footprint covers 28 schools and more than 5,000 children in Thrikkakara, with the foundation and corporate CSR support serving as the funding and implementation base identified at the launch.
The initiative also brings together elected representation, a charitable foundation, schools, the municipal administration and district officials. The launch did not provide details on the meal schedule, the participating corporate contributors, the duration of the funding commitment or the system that will be used to monitor delivery across the 28 schools.
For the schools and families covered by the scheme, the stated objective is to address the need for students to have access to breakfast before classes. The organisers have not announced whether the programme will later be expanded to additional schools or student groups in the constituency.
Subhiksham Thrikkakara has therefore begun as a defined, constituency-wide intervention with a Rs 1 crore CSR allocation and a declared beneficiary base of 5,071 students. Further details on its operating arrangements and continuation will determine how the programme is implemented beyond the launch.
