A new Thrikkakara breakfast scheme will provide free morning meals to 5,071 students from LKG to upper primary classes across 28 schools in the constituency, with the initiative being funded through corporate social responsibility support at a cost of Rs 1 crore.

The project, named Subhiksham Thrikkakara, was launched on Friday under the leadership of Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas and the PT Thomas Foundation. Actor Jayasurya inaugurated the initiative at St Augustine’s LP School in Thykoodam.

The scheme covers children in LKG, UKG, lower primary and upper primary classes. According to the information released about the launch, its stated objective is to ensure that students receive a nutritious breakfast before attending classes.

Thomas said the initiative was launched “with the objective of ensuring that no child had to attend classes hungry”. The programme therefore places food access within the school environment, using CSR funding and a foundation-led implementation model to support students across multiple institutions in the constituency.

The scale of the initiative means that the programme is not limited to a single school or a small pilot. It spans 28 schools and is intended to serve more than 5,000 children. The available details do not specify the duration of the scheme, the composition of the breakfast, the companies providing the CSR funds or the system that will be used to monitor delivery across participating schools.

The launch was attended by Ernakulam district collector G Priyanka, Indian volleyball player Tom Joseph, Thrikkakara municipal chairperson Rashid Ullampilly, representatives of schools and members of the foundation, among others. Their presence brought together elected leadership, district administration, the municipality, schools and the implementing foundation at the launch event.

The initiative also highlights the role of non-government funding in supporting a basic service connected to school attendance and student welfare. In this case, the funding commitment is Rs 1 crore, while the implementing partners are responsible for extending the programme across schools serving different levels of primary education.

For families of participating students, the immediate change is the availability of a breakfast programme before classes. However, the source material does not provide information on eligibility within the covered schools, whether all students will receive the meals daily, or how the programme will operate during holidays and school closures.

The launch establishes the intended coverage and funding arrangement. Further details on implementation, meal standards, procurement, school-level responsibilities and the programme timeline will determine how the breakfast scheme functions beyond its inauguration.
