Thane police have intensified surveillance around the residence of NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad after an unidentified caller allegedly threatened to harm the legislator and claimed to be waiting outside his bungalow.
Awhad alleged on social media that the caller contacted him three times, used abusive language and demanded entry to his residence. The caller reportedly claimed to have been stationed outside the bungalow since 4.30 pm on Sunday.
Police have increased patrolling in the area and are examining CCTV footage from nearby locations as part of the inquiry. Officials said Awhad already has state-provided security.
Prashant Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Zone V, said the Vartak Nagar police had registered a non-cognisable complaint as per protocol and sought court permission to investigate the matter.
“The call has been traced to Wagholi near Pune, and the caller is suspected to be from Yavatmal. A police team is likely to have been sent to Pune. Further investigation is underway,” Kadam said.
The tracing of the number places the investigation across the Thane-Pune urban corridor, although police have not announced the identity of the caller or confirmed whether the person was physically present outside Awhad’s residence. The police inquiry will determine the source of the calls and whether the threat was actionable.
The case also highlights the security and administrative coordination involved when threats are made against public representatives whose residences and movements fall within urban residential areas. For now, police surveillance and local patrolling remain in place while investigators pursue the lead from Wagholi and examine the available CCTV footage.
The next steps are expected to include further investigation by the police team and examination of the caller’s suspected links to Yavatmal, subject to the court permission sought by the Vartak Nagar police.
