Thiruvananthapuram district collector Anju K S has ordered immediate road safety and traffic measures at accident-prone locations and congestion points along the National Highway, including areas affected by ongoing development works. The directions were issued at a review meeting on Wednesday to assess safety arrangements and identify corrective steps to reduce accident risks and traffic disruptions.
Officials have been instructed to install and clearly display direction boards, warning signs and traffic signboards along the highway. The measures are intended to alert motorists to changing road conditions and support safer vehicle movement through stretches affected by National Highway development works.
The collector has also ordered the installation of a speed breaker on the road bypassing the toll plaza near Thiruvallam. The intervention is aimed at addressing accident risks on the bypass road, although the report did not specify the installation timeline, design or agency responsible for executing the work.
Bus movement and parking near two important locations will also be reviewed. At the bus bays near Ulloor Junction and the Public Service Commission office at Pattom, parking arrangements are to be marked so that buses do not occupy the front portions of the bays. Officials were directed to take immediate steps to remove buses parked near bus stands in a way that obstructs traffic.
The measures come as road users navigate construction-related changes and bottlenecks created by highway and flyover works. The review meeting also decided to address the poor condition of service roads in the flyover construction zone at Enchakkal Junction. The report did not provide details of the proposed repair work, its funding source or a completion deadline.
A joint inspection has been ordered at the curve near the General Hospital. The Motor Vehicles Department and the Public Works Department will assess accident risks at the location and identify the safety interventions required. The inspection is expected to examine the road conditions and determine what corrective measures are necessary, though the specific interventions have not yet been announced.
Officials from the district National Highway safety task force, the National Highway inspection team, police, the Motor Vehicles Department, the local self-government department and the Public Works Department attended the meeting. The review focused on identifying road safety deficiencies and ensuring that corrective measures are implemented without delay at locations affected by highway development and infrastructure works.
