TGSRTC union elections were held peacefully on Friday after a gap of nearly a decade, with 35,000 Telangana State Road Transport Corporation workers voting across 115 polling booths in the state. The election will determine the recognised union representing the corporation’s workforce, with results scheduled to be declared on October 17.
The corporation made security arrangements across all RTC depots to ensure the polling proceeded smoothly. Twelve unions contested the election, including the Employees Union, Telangana Mazdoor Union, National Mazdoor Union and Telangana RTC Workers, along with other alliances.
The contest also carried political backing, with the participating unions supported by the ruling Congress, left parties, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The election brings the corporation’s workforce back into a formal recognised-union process after the long gap reported by Deccan Chronicle.
The electorate included 14,514 conductors, 13,769 drivers, 4,207 garage staff and 2,409 workers from other categories. Together, these employees represent the operational, maintenance and support workforce required to run the state transport corporation’s bus services.
The Greater Hyderabad zone recorded the highest number of voters, with 13,797 employees. It was followed by the Karimnagar zone with 11,392 voters and the Hyderabad zone with 9,303. The corporation’s head office had 274 voters, while the bus body unit at Miyapur had 133 voters.
To accommodate the electorate, 32 polling booths were established in the Greater Hyderabad zone, 38 in the Hyderabad zone and 45 in the Karimnagar zone. The distribution of booths covered all the RTC depots in the state and reflected the concentration of eligible voters across the corporation’s zones.
The election is significant for the administration of Telangana’s public bus network because the recognised union will represent the workforce in formal engagement with the corporation. The process covers employees working directly in driving, ticketing, garage operations and other support functions.
The polling concluded without reported disruption, and the next formal milestone is the declaration of results on October 17. The winning union will then emerge as the recognised representative of the TGSRTC workforce.
