Telangana Rooftop Solar Gets Easier as TGSPDCL Streamlines Subsidy Process

Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) has urged domestic electricity consumers to install rooftop solar systems, while announcing measures intended to simplify applications, inspections and subsidy access under the Centre’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

Eligible domestic consumers can receive central financial assistance of up to Rs.78,000 for a rooftop solar system with a capacity of 3 kWp. The subsidy is calculated at Rs.30,000 per kW for the first 2 kWp and Rs.18,000 for the additional 1 kWp. No additional central subsidy is available for capacity above 3 kWp.

TGSPDCL said consumers must meet the scheme’s eligibility criteria and technical standards. Installations must also comply with the Domestic Content Requirement, which requires the use of solar modules manufactured using domestically produced solar cells.

The distribution company has integrated its systems with the PM Surya Ghar Portal 2.0. It has also implemented exemptions from technical feasibility studies for systems up to 10 kWp and automatic load enhancement in accordance with applicable provisions. Inspection procedures have been streamlined, while load enhancement charges can be collected through subsequent electricity bills.

An application fee exemption is available for systems up to 10 kWp for applications registered between June 22, 2026, and March 31, 2027, subject to the applicable conditions. TGSPDCL has also implemented exemptions related to the submission of prescribed documents, including the net-metering agreement, where applicable.

Under the scheme, consumers must register on the official PM Surya Ghar website using their mobile number and electricity connection details. They must select the concerned electricity distribution company, submit an application, obtain the required approvals and install the system through a vendor registered under the programme. Net-metering, inspection and commissioning procedures must then be completed, with the required details uploaded to the portal. After eligibility verification and completion of the prescribed formalities, the subsidy will be credited directly to the beneficiary’s bank account under the scheme guidelines.

Financial assistance is also available for rooftop solar installations undertaken by Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Associations to meet the electricity requirements of common facilities, including electric vehicle charging. Assistance is provided at Rs.18,000 per kW for capacities up to 500 kWp, subject to the prescribed limit of 3 kWp per household.

TGSPDCL said it holds meetings with solar vendors, the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation and REC officials on the first Wednesday of every month to review implementation and resolve operational issues.

As of October 9, TGSPDCL had recorded 44,662 registrations under PM Surya Ghar, with 29,816 systems installed and a combined capacity of 125.613 MW. Under the broader net-metering category, it recorded 30,259 registrations, 29,777 installations and 640.852 MW of capacity.

The Model Solar Village programme recorded 4,335 registrations, 3,190 installations and 6.407 MW, while PM-KUSUM Component-A recorded 720 power purchase agreements, 35 installations and 59 MW. Across these categories, TGSPDCL reported 79,976 registrations, 62,818 installations and total capacity of 831.872 MW.

TGSPDCL CMD Jitesh V. Patil urged eligible domestic consumers to use the central subsidy and install rooftop solar systems. He said the company was taking measures to create awareness and simplify the application process.
