Telangana Rainfall Deficit Hits 95%, Hyderabad Faces Severe Dry Spell

Telangana rainfall deficit leaves a dry urban landscape in Hyderabad

Telangana’s rainfall deficit has reached 95% for October so far, with the state receiving only 3.5 mm between October 1 and 21 against a normal 75.6 mm, according to India Meteorological Department data cited in a Times of India report. The prolonged dry spell is raising concerns over crop prospects, soil moisture and water availability across the state.

The shortfall has been widespread. Twelve districts recorded no rainfall during the first 21 days of October, while the remaining 21 districts reported large deficits. The figures come during a crucial transition period between the southwest and northeast monsoons, when post-monsoon weather systems typically influence rainfall conditions across Telangana.

Hyderabad recorded just 2.8 mm of rain during the period, compared with its October normal of 113.9 mm based on the IMD’s 1991-2020 climatological averages. That represents a 97% deficit for the city. October is generally one of Hyderabad’s wetter months, although rainfall has varied sharply in recent years. The city received 400.7 mm in October 2020, while October 2019 and 2021 also saw variability.

These deficits raise alarms over immediate impacts on agriculture, given the critical stage of crop development and soil moisture replenishment. Water availability for urban and rural populations may also be strained if the dry spell continues. Experts link the reduced rainfall to climate variability, including factors such as El Niño effects and global warming trends influencing Indian monsoon patterns.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and urging water conservation measures. Updates on future rainfall forecasts and mitigation efforts are expected as the month progresses.
