Telangana Power Demand Hits Record 20,003 MW Amid Rising Pressure

Telangana power demand rising as Hyderabad electricity infrastructure serves homes and businesses

Telangana’s peak electricity demand reached a record 20,003 MW on October 15, placing additional pressure on power utilities as agricultural, domestic, commercial, IT and industrial consumption continued to rise across the State.

The latest peak was 1,455 MW higher than the previous financial year’s record of 18,548 MW. Telangana’s daily electricity consumption also climbed to 334.54 million units (MU) on Thursday. Between October 1 and 15, the State recorded an average peak demand of 19,289 MW and average daily consumption of 321.34 MU.

Officials said the increase was being driven by multiple types of demand, including agricultural pumping, household use, commercial activity, IT operations and industrial consumption. Hot and humid weather has also increased the use of cooling appliances, particularly in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area.

Within the jurisdiction of the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited, peak demand reached 12,281 MW on October 15, while daily consumption stood at 228.14 MU. The demand increased further to 12,532 MW at 12.01 pm on Friday, officials said.

The GHMC area recorded a peak demand of 4,220 MW at 6.19 pm on October 15. Its daily electricity consumption had reached 88.22 MU on October 9. The latest peak was substantially higher than the 3,552 MW recorded in the area during October last year.

TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Jitesh V. Patil said the power supply was being managed to meet the requirements of agricultural, domestic, commercial, IT and industrial consumers. He said the utilities were procuring additional power and taking steps to enhance generation capacity as demand increased.

Patil attributed part of the agricultural demand to greater dependence on borewells and water-pumping motors amid declining groundwater levels. The development links electricity demand in rural areas to groundwater stress, as farmers rely more heavily on powered pumping systems for irrigation.

Officials are inspecting power supply conditions, groundwater levels, borewell availability, irrigation motor operations and crop conditions in rural areas. They have been directed to respond promptly to supply interruptions, faulty agricultural motors, damaged service wires and transformer failures, while remaining accessible to farmers in the fields.

Patil appealed to consumers to use electricity judiciously and avoid wastage. He also urged residents to conserve water and adopt energy-efficient practices, including switching off appliances when they are not in use. The utilities’ immediate focus remains on procuring additional power, strengthening generation capacity and addressing supply-related complaints as demand continues to be monitored.
