Telangana police personnel at a Police Commemoration Day parade in Hyderabad

Telangana will fill all existing police vacancies by 2028 and has initiated steps to recruit another 5,000 personnel, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced at the Police Commemoration Day parade in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Speaking at the Police Martyrs’ Memorial at Goshamahal Police Stadium, Mr. Reddy said the State had accorded the highest priority to the Police Department and that maintaining law and order was essential for Telangana’s development. He also said 112 Deputy Superintendents of Police had already been appointed, describing the recruitment as unprecedented.

The announcement comes with the State government seeking to strengthen police capacity while responding to changing forms of crime. Director General of Police C.V. Anand said the department must prepare for cybercrime, narcotics trafficking, food adulteration, road accidents and organised crime. He called for continuous skills development as criminals increasingly use sophisticated methods and technology.

Mr. Reddy also announced higher ex-gratia payments for police personnel and Home Guards who die in the line of duty. The compensation for Home Guards will rise from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh, and the Chief Minister directed the DGP to take the necessary steps to implement the increase.

For constables, the ex-gratia has been increased from ₹40 lakh to ₹1 crore. The compensation for Head Constables and Assistant Sub-Inspectors has also been raised from ₹45 lakh to ₹1 crore. For Sub-Inspectors, it will increase from ₹45 lakh to ₹1.25 crore, while the amount for Inspectors will rise from ₹50 lakh to ₹1.25 crore.

Families of Deputy Superintendents of Police and Additional Superintendents of Police will receive ₹1.50 crore, compared with the earlier ₹50 lakh. The compensation for Superintendents of Police and Indian Police Service officers has been doubled from ₹1 crore to ₹2 crore.

The announcements were made as the State observed Police Commemoration Day, which also honours personnel who died in the line of duty. Mr. Reddy said 154 police personnel had died across India during the year. He paid tribute to Telangana Assistant Sub-Inspector D. Devi Singh, constables Empalli Pramod Kumar and Seelam Kamalakar, and Excise Department personnel Gajula Soumya.

The Chief Minister said the government was working to modernise the Police Department and equip personnel with advanced technology. He cautioned, however, that modern policing should retain the humane approach expected of police officers.

Mr. Reddy also referred to the appointment of transgender persons as traffic assistants, saying the initiative had helped strengthen their dignity and self-respect. He said women’s safety could not be treated as the responsibility of the police alone and called for wider participation by society in preventing crimes against women.

The recruitment plan and compensation revisions will require administrative implementation by the Police Department. The government’s stated deadline is to fill all existing vacancies by 2028, alongside the proposed recruitment of 5,000 additional personnel.
