Telangana Minority Welfare Gets Record Rs 3,768 Crore Allocation

Telangana minority welfare event distributing scholarships and livelihood assistance to beneficiaries

Telangana’s minorities welfare department has received a record allocation of Rs 3,768 crore, with the government linking the spending to education, skills, employment and income-generation support for disadvantaged minority communities.

The allocation was highlighted by minorities welfare minister Mohammed Azharuddin at an event where assistance was distributed to beneficiaries and students. Parents of selected students received cheques of Rs 20 lakh each under the Chief Minister’s Overseas Scholarship scheme.

Mopeds were handed over to beneficiaries from the Fakir community, while women received sewing machines under the Indiramma Minority Mahila Shakti scheme. Cheques of Rs 50,000 each were also distributed under the Minority Mahila Yojana. Candidates who completed skill development and employment-oriented training programmes conducted by the department were presented with certificates.

Azharuddin said the government was focusing on education, skill development and employment to improve the socio-economic conditions of minority communities. He said the department’s assistance, including mopeds, sewing machines, tools, equipment, scholarships and training, was intended to create income opportunities and promote self-employment.

The minister said the Rs 3,768-crore allocation was the highest received by the minorities welfare department in Telangana so far. The announcement places the department’s education and livelihood programmes within a larger public-service framework, combining direct financial assistance with institutional support and employment-oriented training.

Education support is being delivered through 205 institutions run by the Telangana Minorities Residential Educational Institutions Society, or TMREIS. These institutions provide education from Classes 5 to 12 to minority students. The government is spending around Rs 1.2 lakh per student annually, according to the minister.

Azharuddin also said 23 centres of excellence were functioning under TMREIS to provide coaching for national and state-level competitive examinations. Students from the institutions were securing ranks in examinations including NEET, IIT-JEE, CLAT and CUET, he said.

The minister said the government was taking steps to establish 10 residential degree colleges each for minority boys and girls in the first phase. The proposed colleges would extend the residential education model beyond school-level institutions, although the report did not specify their locations, timelines, enrolment capacity or construction status.

The event combined scholarship support, livelihood assets, training certification and residential education initiatives. Further implementation details, including the schedule for the proposed degree colleges and the department-wise deployment of the allocation, were not provided in the announcement.
