Telangana Medical Colleges Get ₹379 Crore Centre Funding Boost

Telangana medical colleges and affiliated government hospital infrastructure

The Centre has approved ₹379.29 crore to upgrade Telangana’s government medical colleges and their affiliated hospitals after the state added 465 postgraduate medical seats across 26 institutions over the past two years.

The Union health ministry communicated the approval on Thursday, clearing proposals submitted by the Telangana government under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme, according to the state health minister’s office. The funding will support infrastructure development linked to the increase in postgraduate capacity.

The Centre will provide an average of ₹81.57 lakh for each additional postgraduate seat. The state government will contribute a further ₹253 crore, taking the combined investment in the medical colleges and affiliated hospitals to approximately ₹632 crore.

The allocation links central support to the expansion of postgraduate education in the state’s government medical college network. The 465 additional seats have been created across 26 colleges over a two-year period, increasing the infrastructure requirements for teaching, clinical training and hospital services at those institutions.

Separately, the National Medical Commission has approved an increase of 110 undergraduate MBBS seats at RIMS Adilabad and government medical colleges in Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar and Siddipet. These four institutions and their affiliated hospitals will receive infrastructure improvement works worth ₹108 crore.

Of the ₹108 crore earmarked for the four colleges, ₹64 crore will be provided by the Centre, while the state government will undertake the works. The source report did not specify the individual projects, construction timelines or the facilities to be upgraded at each institution.

The approvals expand both postgraduate and undergraduate medical education capacity within Telangana’s public healthcare system. Implementation will now depend on the state government taking up the proposed infrastructure works and on the approved funding being used for the government colleges and hospitals covered by the proposals.
