Telangana Autorickshaw Fares Rise to ₹30 for First 1.6 km

Telangana has revised autorickshaw fares across the state, fixing the minimum fare at ₹30 for the first 1.6 km and setting a new per-kilometre rate for subsequent travel. The revised tariff will also make late-night journeys more expensive, with passengers travelling between 11 pm and 5 am required to pay one-and-a-half times the normal fare.

The Transport, Roads and Buildings Department issued the government order on Friday. Under the revised structure, passengers will be charged ₹14 for every kilometre after the initial 1.6 km. The order also caps detention charges, applicable when an autorickshaw remains stationary during a journey, at ₹0.75 per minute.

The new fares apply to autorickshaws registered and operating in Telangana. Digital auto meters will have to be reset to record the revised tariff. At the beginning of a trip, the meter will display the minimum fare of ₹30 and then increase at the prescribed rate once the journey exceeds 1.6 km.

The transport commissioner has been given three months to permit the resetting of existing meters. During this transition period, autorickshaws must display approved tariff cards showing both the existing and revised fares. The requirement is intended to provide passengers with the applicable rates while vehicles continue to shift to the updated meter settings.

The order also permits a luggage charge of 50 paise per package, with briefcases and handbags excluded from the levy. The charge can be applied for luggage weighing up to 100 kg. The revised rules therefore cover not only the basic fare but also waiting time, late-night travel and certain categories of baggage.

For passengers, the most immediate change will be the ₹30 minimum fare and the higher rate applicable during the 11 pm to 5 am period. The late-night multiplier will affect residents travelling during hours when public transport availability may be more limited, although the government order, as reported, does not provide separate fare details for specific routes or cities.

The three-month meter-reset period means that the transition from the current tariff to the revised one will take place alongside the display of both fare structures in autorickshaws. The transport department’s approved tariff cards and updated digital meters will determine how the revised charges are communicated and recorded during implementation.

The government order applies across Telangana, making the revision relevant to autorickshaw services in Hyderabad and other urban areas of the state. Further implementation will depend on the transport commissioner’s approval process and the resetting of meters within the stipulated three-month period.
