Tata Motors-Stellantis Partnership Expands India’s Global Auto Role

Tata Motors Stellantis partnership linked to vehicle development at an Indian automotive plant

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (TMPV), Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM) and Stellantis India have signed a definitive agreement to collaborate on vehicle technology and product development, expanding a partnership that will develop India-made vehicles for more than 50 global markets.

Under the agreement, TMPV will give Stellantis access to its advanced product technology and vehicle architecture. Stellantis will use its product development and engineering capabilities in India to adapt the platforms to different customer, regulatory and operating requirements across international markets.

The companies said vehicles developed through the arrangement will be manufactured in India at Fiat India Automobiles Pvt Ltd (FIAPL), their 50:50 joint venture. The agreement therefore extends the relationship beyond manufacturing and supply-chain cooperation into product architecture, engineering and global vehicle development.

The deal follows a memorandum of understanding signed in February 2026. That MoU covered potential collaboration across manufacturing, engineering and supply chains in India and overseas. Monday’s definitive agreement converts that broader intent into a specific technology and product collaboration, according to the companies.

Shailesh Chandra, managing director and chief executive officer of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, said the partnership had developed over more than two decades and was based on “mutual trust and complementary strengths”. He said the agreement extended the relationship into advanced vehicle technology and architecture and reflected the competitiveness of TMPV’s capabilities in those areas.

“We are delighted that Stellantis will leverage them to develop products for global markets,” Chandra said. He added that the companies would combine their strengths to create vehicles engineered and made in India for customers in India and overseas.

The agreement gives Stellantis access to Tata Motors’ vehicle technology while allowing the global automaker to draw on its own international product development and market expertise. Stellantis has 14 automotive brands and operates across Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific.

Tianshu Xin, chief operating officer of the Stellantis Asia-Pacific region, said partnerships were central to the company’s approach in Asia-Pacific. He said combining Tata Motors’ capabilities in India with Stellantis’ global product development and market reach would support competitive vehicle development in India and expand export potential across international markets.

The companies described India as a strategic manufacturing and development hub for Stellantis. The arrangement also places FIAPL, the joint venture production base, at the centre of a wider effort to use India’s engineering capabilities and manufacturing scale for vehicles intended for multiple overseas markets.

The announcement does not specify the vehicle models, production volumes, investment value or launch timelines under the definitive agreement. The companies said the collaboration would focus on developing and manufacturing vehicles in India for global markets, with further implementation details to emerge as the product-development programme progresses.
