Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: Orange Warning Issued for Six Districts

Tamil Nadu rain alert over a waterlogged Chennai road during monsoon showers

Tamil Nadu is facing a widespread rain spell on October 17, with an orange alert issued for six districts and heavy-rain warnings covering 31 districts, including Chennai and Madurai, according to the Chennai Meteorological Centre. The warning includes thunderstorms, strong winds and the possibility of very heavy rain in several locations.

The orange alert applies to Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram and Ranipet districts. The weather centre said these areas could receive very heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds. The warning comes as the northeast monsoon has begun over Tamil Nadu.

Rainfall had already been significant in parts of the state during the 24 hours ending on the morning covered by the weather bulletin. Adayamadai in Kanniyakumari district recorded the highest rainfall at 18 cm. Sithirangode, also in Kanniyakumari, received 16 cm, while Pollachi and Makinampatti in Coimbatore and Periyakulam in Theni recorded 15 cm each. Ponmanai in Kanniyakumari recorded 14 cm.

The weather centre attributed the conditions to a cyclonic circulation over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and another circulation over the southern coastal Andhra Pradesh region. These systems are expected to support thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rainfall across a large part of the state.

Heavy rain is possible in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Tiruppur, Vellore, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Namakkal, Cuddalore, Karur, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts, as well as Puducherry. Thunderstorms and strong winds are also expected in these areas.

For urban residents, the forecast raises immediate concerns around road visibility, waterlogging, traffic movement and the operation of outdoor services. The bulletin does not announce any specific closures or civic restrictions, but the combination of heavy rain, lightning and strong winds could affect daily travel and activities in exposed locations.

In Chennai and its suburban areas, the sky is expected to remain generally cloudy. Some locations may receive moderate rain with thunderstorms, while occasional heavy showers are also possible. The weather centre said most other districts could receive moderate rain with thunderstorms and strong winds at several places.

The latest warning follows the beginning of the northeast monsoon, a period when rainfall can quickly affect drainage systems, roads and low-lying urban areas. The Chennai Meteorological Centre’s district-level alert remains the immediate official forecast for the day, with conditions expected to vary across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
