Tamil Nadu Police Stations Get Up to 567% More Contingency Funds

Tamil Nadu police station linked to the revised contingency fund allocation

The Tamil Nadu government has sharply increased the monthly contingency funds available to police stations across the state, approving an annual allocation of Rs 71.02 crore for day-to-day administrative and operational expenses.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay during the demand for grants for the police department for 2026-27 in the Assembly, according to an official government release reported by PTI on Wednesday. The government said the higher allocation would reduce police stations’ dependence on unofficial financial sources and help prevent and eradicate corrupt practices.

Under the revised funding structure, police stations have been divided into three categories based on the volume of crimes registered. Stations in the first category will receive Rs 30,000 a month, up from Rs 3,750. The second category allocation has been increased from Rs 6,000 to Rs 40,000 a month, while stations in the third category will receive Rs 50,000 instead of Rs 8,250.

The revised amounts represent increases of 700% for the first category, about 567% for the second and about 506% for the third. The government’s annual sanction of Rs 71.02 crore will cover the enhanced contingency expenditure across police stations in the state.

Contingency funds are intended to meet routine expenses that arise in the functioning of public offices. For police stations, these can include day-to-day administrative and operational requirements. The government said the revision was designed to respond to rising expenses at the station level.

The decision places the funding of police stations within a broader administrative effort to reduce reliance on unofficial sources of money. The official release explicitly linked the increased allocations to preventing and eliminating corrupt practices, although it did not provide a station-wise breakdown of the annual expenditure or details of the monitoring mechanism for the revised funds.

The classification system ties the monthly allocation to the volume of crimes registered at each station, creating different funding levels for stations with differing workloads. The government order sanctioning the annual expenditure is the next administrative basis for implementing the enhanced allocations across Tamil Nadu.
