Tamil Nadu ITI Students Rise to Second in National Exam

Tamil Nadu ITI students recognised in the national examination ranking

Tamil Nadu’s government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) students have helped the state move up to second place nationally in the latest All India Industrial Training examination, with 91.90 per cent of government ITI candidates passing, according to a report by Dinamalar – Tamil Nadu.

The examination is conducted every year in July and August by the Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The examination covers candidates from ITIs across the states.

Tamil Nadu has 132 government ITIs and 278 private ITIs. Together, these institutions provide training to young people in 70 engineering and 34 non-engineering trades, according to the report.

A total of 19,209 students from government ITIs in Tamil Nadu appeared for this year’s examination. Of them, 91.90 per cent passed. Among private ITIs, 10,186 students took the examination and recorded a pass percentage of 77.16.

Tamil Nadu’s performance was also reflected in the national ranking list released by the DGT. Students from the state secured 60 positions in the list. Government ITIs accounted for 55 of those positions, while private ITIs accounted for five.

The result represents an improvement over the previous year, when Tamil Nadu ranked fourth nationally. Kerala ranked first in the latest results, placing Tamil Nadu second.

The figures show a marked difference between the reported pass rates of government and private ITI candidates in the state. The government ITI pass rate was 14.74 percentage points higher than the private ITI rate in this examination. The supplied report does not provide a trade-wise or district-wise breakdown of the results.

ITI performance is closely linked to the availability of trained workers for industrial, construction, maintenance and other technical activities. However, the report does not state how many of the successful candidates have moved into employment, apprenticeships or further training after qualifying.

Tamil Nadu Employment and Training Department Director Pazhani described the result as evidence of the quality of training provided at the state’s industrial training institutes. The department’s statement, as reported by Dinamalar, did not specify any new measures or timelines following the national ranking.

The next stage for the department will be to track how the examination performance translates into employment and industry-linked opportunities for the successful candidates. The supplied report does not provide further details on those outcomes.
