Tamil Nadu Expands Free Bus Travel for Women Across 12,692 Buses

Tamil Nadu has expanded its free bus travel scheme for women to 12,692 government buses operating across metropolitan, urban and rural routes, with the state government saying the programme will benefit 84.32 lakh women passengers every day.

Chief Minister Vijay launched the expanded “Women’s Victory Journey” programme on a Chennai–Kanchipuram government bus after paying floral respects to Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait at Koyambedu in Chennai. During the launch, he boarded the bus and distributed free tickets to women passengers, according to a report by Dinamalar.

The expansion covers government buses operating in metropolitan and municipal areas, as well as express, LSS, deluxe and other government services identified under the programme. It also includes ordinary suburban buses and ordinary hill buses operating on routes longer than 40 kilometres.

The coverage is significant because the scheme is not limited to a single city bus network. The listed services span different operating environments, from buses serving dense urban areas to suburban and hill routes. Women travelling on eligible services will be able to use the buses without paying a fare, according to the details reported by Dinamalar.

The state government has described the expansion as a measure intended to make public transport more accessible to women across Tamil Nadu. The projected daily beneficiary figure of 84.32 lakh indicates the scale at which the policy is expected to operate, although the supplied report does not provide a separate breakdown by city, route type or district.

The launch took place at Koyambedu, one of Chennai’s major bus transport locations, before the chief minister travelled towards Kanchipuram. The public distribution of free tickets to women passengers marked the operational start of the expanded programme on the route.

The programme’s practical effect will depend on how eligible services are identified and used across the state’s bus network. The report specifies the categories of buses covered, but does not provide details on ticketing procedures, reimbursement arrangements for the state transport undertakings, or the duration and financial structure of the expansion.

For passengers, the immediate change announced is the availability of fare-free travel for women on the specified government services. For the transport system, the programme covers a large fleet across urban, suburban and hill routes. The state government’s next implementation details will determine how the expanded coverage is communicated and administered across the 12,692 buses.
