Tahir Hussain Convicted in Delhi Riots Case; 12 Acquitted

A Delhi court on Saturday convicted former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain of rioting and abetment to rioting in a case linked to the northeast Delhi violence of 2020, while acquitting 12 other accused of all charges.

Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh of the Karkardooma court delivered the verdict in a case arising from an FIR registered by the Dayalpur police. The case concerned allegations that a shop belonging to Irshad Ali was looted and set on fire during the violence on February 24, 2020.

The court held Mr. Hussain guilty of rioting and abetment. It discharged him of several other offences, including damage to property, arson and criminal conspiracy. The detailed order was awaited, according to the report.

Mr. Ali told the court that he had suffered losses of ₹27-28 lakh, including the value of goods allegedly stolen from his shop and damage to the property. Another complainant, Mohd Zahid, alleged that members of the rioting mob had raised slogans supporting the former councillor.

The court acquitted the 12 other accused of all charges in the case. The proceedings focused on allegations arising from the violence in northeast Delhi, where attacks resulted in deaths, injuries and extensive damage to homes, shops and other property in February 2020.

The verdict is the latest court development involving Mr. Hussain. He and four others were convicted in July in a separate case concerning the murder of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma during the riots.

The northeast Delhi riots claimed 53 lives and left many people injured. The violence also disrupted neighbourhoods and damaged commercial properties, bringing questions of public safety, policing, compensation and criminal accountability into the city’s legal and administrative record.

The court will hear arguments on sentencing on November 16, 2026. The sentence in the present case will be determined at that hearing.
