Three migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh were killed and another was critically injured after their motorcycle struck the parapet of a rail overbridge near Kudsad village in Surat district late Tuesday night, sending all four riders about 50 feet to the ground, police said.
The crash took place at around 11pm when the four men were travelling on a two-wheeler. Police said the motorcycle hit the bridge’s safety wall while negotiating a turn, causing the riders to fall from the overbridge. The victims were taken to hospital with multiple fractures, where three were declared dead. The fourth, identified as Abhishek Varma, who was driving the motorcycle, was admitted in critical condition to New Civil Hospital in Surat.
The deceased were identified as Saurabh Yadav, 18, Vikas Chhotelal Varma, 18, and Vikas Hiralal Varma, 20. All four men were from Uttar Pradesh and worked as labourers in textile weaving units in Surat, according to the report. Their deaths highlight the risks faced by migrant workers who depend on two-wheelers to travel between industrial and residential areas, although police have not linked the crash to any broader road-safety pattern.
Passersby alerted authorities after noticing the motorcycle on the overbridge but not seeing anyone nearby. When they checked the area below, they found the victims. Police said one of the men had fallen into a field, while the others landed on the road outside it.
A complaint was lodged at Kim police station by Vishal Varma, the elder brother of Vikas Hiralal Varma. The incident occurred on a rail overbridge, a road structure that carries traffic over railway lines and can expose crash victims to a significant fall where vehicles breach or pass beyond the edge protection.
Police said investigators are examining the exact cause of the crash. They are considering whether the rider lost control while taking the turn or whether another vehicle struck the motorcycle. Police also said the accident occurred late at night, when heavy-vehicle movement is typically low, and that efforts were under way to trace additional eyewitnesses and gather more information.
The investigation will determine the sequence of events and whether any other vehicle was involved. Further details are expected as police record witness statements and assess the circumstances surrounding the motorcycle’s collision with the overbridge parapet.
