BRS leader T. Harish Rao has demanded that the Telangana government withdraw from a proposed joint venture between Singareni Collieries Company Limited and Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited, arguing that power from a Singareni-linked thermal plant should be reserved for Telangana.
In an open letter to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Rao said the agreement would result in 800 MW generated at the Singareni Thermal Power Plant at its pithead in Jaipur, Telangana, being supplied to Rajasthan. He also questioned the decision to invest in large-scale solar capacity outside the state while Telangana was facing power shortages.
According to the report, the joint venture would involve SCCL and RRVUNL setting up a 1,500 MW solar power plant in Rajasthan at an estimated cost of ₹22,000 crore. The reported arrangement links coal-based generation from Telangana with a renewable-energy project in Rajasthan, making the allocation of generation and investment a matter of state-level political and administrative debate.
Rao said Telangana had no reason to commit such a substantial investment elsewhere when the state was experiencing electricity shortages. He demanded that the 800 MW from the Jaipur thermal plant be used exclusively to meet Telangana’s power requirements.
The dispute places the focus on how a state-owned mining and power company balances commercial partnerships with the energy needs of the state in which its coal and thermal assets are located. SCCL’s proposed participation in the Rajasthan project, as described in the reported agreement, would also involve capital deployment outside Telangana.
Rao warned that the BRS would launch an agitation to protect what he described as Telangana’s interests if the Congress government did not withdraw from the joint venture. The report did not include a response from the Telangana government, SCCL or RRVUNL to the allegations and demands.
The immediate issue for the state government is whether it will review the reported power-supply arrangement and the proposed solar investment. No further decision, revised allocation or official response was reported at the time of publication.
