Secunderabad Unauthorised Function Hall Demolished After 30-Year Legal Battle

Secunderabad unauthorised function hall demolition site with rubble and collapsed structural pillars

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board demolished an unauthorised function hall in Sikh Village on Friday after securing a favourable court ruling, ending a legal dispute over the commercial structure that had continued since 1996. Police deployed a large contingent at the site to prevent any law-and-order disturbance during the demolition.

The function hall had been built on a bungalow spread across four acres, according to Cantonment Engineer Ch Uma Shankar, who spoke to Telangana Today. The Secunderabad Cantonment Board had approached the court seeking the structure’s demolition in 1996 and continued the legal proceedings for decades, he said.

The demolition took place two days after the court ruled in favour of the board, Uma Shankar said. The report does not identify the court or provide details of the order, but the ruling allowed the cantonment authorities to proceed against the commercial construction.

The action highlights the enforcement role of the cantonment administration in regulating construction and land use within its jurisdiction. A function hall built on a bungalow property represented a change in the use and scale of the site, while the board’s long-running legal action shows how disputes over unauthorised structures can remain unresolved for extended periods before a final enforcement step.

Police presence was maintained during the operation because officials anticipated the possibility of a disturbance. The deployment formed part of the law-and-order arrangements made for the demolition, although the report does not provide details of any confrontation, arrest or injury.

Large quantities of debris remained scattered across the property after the structure was brought down. The debris included shattered interior walls, collapsed structural pillars, stage fittings and decorative materials, indicating the scale of the building and its use as a commercial venue.

The demolition marks the latest step in the board’s legal and enforcement process against the property owner. The report does not state whether the board has announced any further action concerning the cleared site, including debris removal, restoration or future land use.
