Sayyajirao Road Subway Reopens With CCTV After Safety Review

Sayyajirao Road subway in Mysuru reopened with CCTV and improved pedestrian safety facilities

Mysuru City Corporation has reopened the pedestrian subway on Sayyajirao Road after a safety review, adding CCTV cameras, waste bins and interior artwork to encourage residents, shoppers and visitors to use the facility instead of crossing the busy road at street level.

MCC commissioner MK Savita inspected the subway and reviewed the safety measures before it was reopened to the public. The facility had remained closed for much of the period since it was built nearly a decade ago because of safety concerns.

The subway was opened only during Mysuru Dasara in 2025, when the road experiences a sharp increase in pedestrian and vehicular movement. Sayyajirao Road is one of the city’s busy roads, and heavy traffic during the festival and other public events can make surface-level crossings difficult for pedestrians.

According to MCC, the reopened facility is intended to provide a safer crossing option, reduce the risk of accidents and support smoother traffic movement along the road. Its reopening also restores the use of an existing public asset that had been unavailable for regular pedestrian movement.

The civic body has installed CCTV cameras inside the subway to strengthen security. Artwork has been added to the interior walls as part of an aesthetic makeover, while waste bins have been provided to support cleanliness and maintenance.

The facility is expected to serve local residents, shoppers and visitors, with the greatest use anticipated during periods of high footfall such as Dasara and other major public events. The reopening places greater emphasis on directing pedestrians away from informal road crossings and towards a designated grade-separated route.

MCC has appealed to citizens to use the subway while crossing Sayyajirao Road. It has also asked users to keep the facility clean and protect the artwork, CCTV equipment and other amenities installed as part of the reopening.
