A reported firing incident inside Mumbai’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park has triggered a joint investigation by the Forest Department and police after bloodstains were found deep inside the Yeoor Range. A preliminary Forest Department report said one person was reportedly killed and others may have been injured, but the casualty details and circumstances have not yet been officially confirmed.
The incident was reported in the early hours of Tuesday in Survey No. 101 under Chena Circle in the Yeoor Range. According to the preliminary report, five to six unidentified persons had reportedly entered the forest area before the alleged firing. Forest Department personnel and police officials subsequently inspected the site.
During the inspection, officials found bloodstains approximately 450 metres inside the forest from its boundary. The preliminary report stated that the person believed to have died was suspected to be a resident of Belkri Pada, an area within the limits of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation.
The report did not establish the exact circumstances of the alleged firing, its motive or the identities of the deceased and injured persons. It also did not confirm whether the bloodstains were directly connected to the reported incident. These details are being examined by Kashigaon Police Station and the Forest Department as part of the ongoing investigation.
The location falls within Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a large protected forest area that extends across parts of Mumbai and the adjoining metropolitan region. Access to forest areas is regulated, and incidents reported within the park require coordination between enforcement agencies responsible for policing and forest protection. In this case, personnel from both departments conducted the preliminary inspection after receiving information about the alleged incident.
The reported presence of unidentified people inside the Yeoor Range is also part of the inquiry. The preliminary report did not state how the group entered the area, whether any weapon had been recovered or whether arrests had been made. The police and Forest Department are expected to establish the sequence of events, verify the identities of those involved and determine whether a firing actually took place.
The incident comes after a separate violent crime was reported in July in a forested area near Lovegarh on the outskirts of Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Kandivali East. In that case, Samta Nagar Police arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly murdering his 17-year-old girlfriend. The earlier case was investigated separately and is not stated to be connected to the latest reported incident.
Kashigaon Police Station and the Forest Department are continuing their investigations into the Yeoor Range report. Further details are expected once officials establish the identities of the people involved and confirm the reported death, injuries and cause of the incident.
