Former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh has secured bail from the Supreme Court in the alleged financial irregularities case linked to his tenure, but his release will depend on the conditions fixed by the CBI court in Alipore and the completion of legal formalities.
A bench of Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Prasanna B. Varale granted bail on Friday, citing Ghosh’s prolonged incarceration and the slow progress of the trial. The Central Bureau of Investigation had already filed a chargesheet in the case before the special court in Alipore.
The trial court will determine the amount of the financial bond and other conditions attached to the release. Ghosh’s lawyers must also file a bail execution plea before the judicial magistrate in charge of the court and submit a physically certified copy of the Supreme Court’s order, according to lawyers and a senior police officer responsible for security at the court.
With the Alipore court closed for Puja, regular proceedings are scheduled to resume on October 27. The bail execution process, however, is expected to begin during the holidays and will not take place before Monday, the police officer said. Ghosh could walk out of jail after the magistrate sets the conditions and the legal formalities are completed.
The CBI’s anti-corruption wing arrested Ghosh in September 2024 over alleged financial misconduct and fraud during his time as principal. The agency charged him with offences including criminal breach of trust by a public servant, cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy.
The investigation followed the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, 2024. During the probe into the alleged financial irregularities, a CBI officer also alleged that Ghosh manipulated merit scores to illegally accommodate 24 undeserving candidates as house staff at the hospital. These allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings.
Ghosh was also shown as arrested in a separate case concerning the alleged delay in registering the first information report in the rape-and-murder case, misleading investigators and tampering with the crime scene. That case also named Abhijit Mondal, then officer-in-charge of Tala police station.
In December 2024, a Sealdah court granted bail to Ghosh and Mondal in the separate case after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet within 90 days. The Supreme Court’s latest order relates specifically to the financial irregularities case.
The immediate next step is the Alipore court’s determination of the bail conditions, followed by the filing and acceptance of the bail execution documents. Until those steps are completed, the Supreme Court order does not by itself result in Ghosh’s release.
