RPSG Plans ₹70,000 Crore Capex Push Led by Renewable Energy

RPSG renewable energy expansion with wind turbines and solar panels in India

The RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group is preparing to invest ₹65,000–70,000 crore over the next five years, with the largest share expected to go into energy and renewable projects, followed by chemicals, Vice-Chairman Shashwat Goenka said in an interview with The Hindu BusinessLine.

The proposed investment programme will span the group’s businesses, including CESC and Purvah Green Power in energy, PCBL Chemical, Firstsource Solutions, FMCG brand Too Yumm!, Spencer’s Retail, Nature’s Basket and Saregama. Goenka said the group’s renewable expansion would be a major component of the capital expenditure cycle through 2030.

RPSG’s energy portfolio currently includes electricity distribution and renewable generation. Goenka said the group had about 1.8 gigawatts of operational renewable capacity and expected that figure to rise to 2.3–2.4 GW by the end of the year. Purvah Green Power operates across wind, solar and battery storage.

The company participates in tenders conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India and utility tenders, while also working with industries that have high power requirements, according to Goenka. The combination of generation capacity and storage is intended to support the group’s expansion across multiple segments of the energy market, although the interview did not provide a project-wise breakdown of the planned investment.

Goenka said the group’s businesses were being affected by changes in technology, consumer behaviour and energy systems. He described the leadership challenge as one of responding faster to uncertainty, saying that “the pivot has to come quicker” as business models change.

In consumer businesses, he pointed to the shift from general trade and modern retail to e-commerce and quick commerce. Too Yumm!, the group’s FMCG business, has been testing different formats, flavours, pack sizes and price points in response to changing demand. Goenka said the company had launched products such as makhana, later moved away from them and subsequently returned to the category.

He also linked changing household patterns and rising demand for convenience to the group’s retail operations. At Nature’s Basket, the company has introduced preparation services such as pre-soaking pulses and preparing fruits and vegetables that are difficult to cut, allowing consumers to reduce kitchen work while continuing to cook at home.

The group is also repositioning Firstsource Solutions as artificial intelligence changes the business-services sector. Goenka said the company was moving from a traditional back-office role towards becoming a business-growth partner. This includes focusing on the value delivered to clients and using AI to support that delivery, rather than relying primarily on a full-time-employee model.

The scale of the proposed capex programme places energy and renewable generation at the centre of RPSG’s next phase of expansion. However, the interview did not specify the individual projects, investment schedules, financing arrangements or expected capacity additions associated with the ₹65,000–70,000 crore plan. The group’s next milestones will depend on project execution across energy, renewables and chemicals over the coming five years.
