Rohtak Road Recarpeting Ordered as Delhi Agencies Face Joint Fix

Damaged Rohtak Road in Delhi marked for recarpeting after utility work and road deterioration.

Rohtak Road in Outer Delhi will be re-carpeted after pending utility work by the Delhi Jal Board, BSES and Delhi Transco Limited is completed, Public Works Department officials said following a multi-agency inspection on Saturday. The road has deteriorated because of digging carried out for utility work.

PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh directed officials to coordinate the agencies’ works so that the road is not repeatedly excavated after resurfacing. The directions were issued during a ‘Government on Wheels’ tour, in which officials from the PWD, DJB, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, district administrations and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi travelled together to inspect problem locations and take decisions on site.

The inspection covered Panchkuiyan Road, Rani Jhansi Road, Idgah Road, Rohtak Road, Zakhira, Karampura Flyover, Patel Road, Shadipur and Shankar Road. Shopkeepers, commuters and residents raised local problems during the tour, according to officials.

The PWD was directed to repair damaged road patches and broken footpaths along Rani Jhansi Road and Idgah Road within 15 days. Beneath the Rani Jhansi Flyover, the PWD and MCD were asked to install new lights, conduct a cleanliness drive and remove encroachments within a week.

On New Rohtak Road and in Zakhira, the PWD will desilt drains and clear choked outlets to address waterlogging. At Karampura Flyover, Patel Road and Shadipur, the PWD and DMRC were directed to repair potholes, restore road markings and signage, and remove construction debris near metro structures.

The MCD was also instructed to clear roadside debris and improve sanitation on Shankar Road. The range of directions places road repairs, drainage, lighting, encroachment removal and sanitation within one coordinated inspection rather than treating each problem as an isolated complaint.

The condition of Rohtak Road illustrates the operational difficulty created when utility agencies undertake excavation without synchronising the completion and restoration of works. Officials said resurfacing will begin after the pending work by the DJB, BSES and DTL is finished, but no completion date for those utility works was provided.

The ‘Government on Wheels’ initiative was launched last year to bring officials from multiple departments together for joint inspections and on-the-spot decisions. Earlier tours covered East Delhi, Outer and Rural Delhi, and South Delhi.

Singh said officials would revisit the inspected locations to assess the work completed. An official said a review of Saturday’s directions would be held within a month.
