Recharge Pits Push Gains Ground as Medak MP Flags Drought Risk

Recharge pits being built near a school in Chinna Nizampet, Siddipet, for groundwater conservation

Medak MP M. Raghunandan Rao has urged farmers across villages in Siddipet district to use the ₹36,000 assistance available under the VB-G RAM-G scheme to build water recharge pits, saying the structures could help revive dried-up borewells and improve groundwater levels.

Rao inaugurated the first recharge system constructed under the scheme at a school in Chinna Nizampet village in Bhoompeta mandal. He called for recharge-pit construction to be taken up across villages as a mass movement and asked local elected representatives and officials to begin the work on a war footing.

According to the report, the pits are intended to improve the water-holding capacity of borewells and support groundwater conservation. Rao said farmers should act quickly and conserve every drop of water as villages prepare for the possibility of drought.

The MP linked the drying of borewells to adverse weather conditions associated with El Niño. He said local recharge initiatives could help strengthen groundwater levels and reduce the effects of dry weather on farmers.

The VB-G RAM-G scheme provides financial support to farmers for constructing water-recharge structures. The assistance is intended to help eligible farmers build recharge pits, with proper use of the funds expected to support groundwater replenishment, according to Rao’s remarks reported by Deccan Chronicle.

Rao also called on sarpanches, deputy sarpanches, public representatives and officials to support the initiative and begin construction in villages. The appeal places local institutions at the centre of implementing the recharge-pit programme, from mobilising farmers to facilitating the use of scheme assistance.

The inauguration at Chinna Nizampet marks the first reported recharge system built under the scheme in the village. The report does not provide the number of farmers eligible for assistance, the total number of pits planned across Siddipet district or a deadline for completing the work.

The initiative comes as the availability and retention of groundwater remain central to farm activity in areas where borewells have dried up. Recharge pits are being presented by the MP as a local water-conservation measure that can increase the amount of water retained around borewell systems and help villages prepare for water shortages.

The next steps identified in the report are the wider construction of recharge pits across villages, mobilisation by local representatives and officials, and the use of the ₹36,000 assistance by farmers under the VB-G RAM-G scheme.
